The derelict gold mines, located approximately 150 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg, have been under police surveillance for the past month as authorities work to remove those illegally operating within them. In an effort to encourage evacuations, officials have restricted food and water supplies to those inside the mine.
Many of the illegal miners, commonly referred to as Zama Zamas, come from neighboring countries such as Mozambique and Lesotho. They often endure harsh conditions while working and living in South Africa.
The presence of these miners has sparked concerns among locals, who associate their activities with a rise in criminality. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has labeled them a “menace” to the country’s economy and security.
As rescue efforts continue and the situation unfolds, the plight of these miners highlights broader issues related to illegal mining operations and the socioeconomic challenges faced by many in the region. The government’s response and ongoing discussions about how to address these challenges will be crucial in determining the future safety and security of both local communities and those seeking work in South Africa.
